Our Mission

Aptitude @ Altitude

We are a volunteer organization dedicated to providing backcountry search and rescue services, as well as public education on backcountry safety in Ouray County, Colorado.  We work under the statutory authority of the Ouray County Sheriff's Office.

Our Volunteers

Our dedicated 30-member team annually donates thousands of person-hours serving Coloradoans in Ouray County and visitors to our beautiful state. These hours represent time away from families, unpaid time off from work and business to attend meetings and trainings; educate the public with our public education programs such our annual Avalanche Safety Talks, and of course, engage in search and rescue missions.

Facilities, Equipment and Administration

In addition to maintaining mission-ready capabilities, our volunteers spend countless hours performing our daily operations, logistics and team administration. Dedicated volunteers are responsible for maintaining our facility in Ouray, four team-owned vehicles and all the rescue equipment.

Collaborations

In addition to responding in Ouray County, OMRT is available for assistance on wilderness search and rescue missions in neighboring communities, through Ouray County Sheriff’s Office’s mutual aid agreements. OMRT is also activated when needed by the county's incident command group under the County’s Emergency Plans.

Ouray Mountain Rescue Team is also committed to promoting the sustainable future of backcountry search and rescue (BSAR) in Colorado. We have actively contributed to Colorado Search and Rescue Association’s initiatives to advance BSAR sustainability in rural communities.

The Ouray Mountain Rescue Team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at no charge to our rescue subjects.
