Ouray Mountain Rescue Team - About Us

The Ouray Mountain Rescue Team was incorporated as a non-profit organization to serve the technical rescue and emergency medical service needs of Ouray County and the surrounding mountain communities of southwestern Colorado. Our team is made up entirely of volunteers and all of our financial support comes from fund raising events, merchandise sales, donations, and grants. Our services are free - we do not charge to search for, or rescue, anyone.

All active members of the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team are available 24/7 for call-outs that range from high and low angle rescues, swift water emergencies, searches, and mutual aid to neighboring counties. The Team holds general membership meetings the second Wednesday of each month, proceeded by a scenario-based training session the following Saturday. Members also participate in ad-hoc training sessions, and represent the team at a number of community events.

Team members must maintain a high level of competence in a number of traditional search and rescue disciplines. Team member skills include technical rope rescue (high and low angle), emergency medicine, avalanche, swift water, tracking, search management, and communications.

Our Rescue Barn

After years of planning, hard work, and an unprecedented outpouring of support from our community and many supporters, the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team received a Certificate of Occupancy for our new rescue facility in November 2008. Without the generous support of so many people, this dream could not have been realized - the OMRT rescue barn stands as a testament grass-roots efforts.

The new facility is located just South of Ouray near the Ouray Ice Park and consists of 3 oversized bays on the ground level, where our vehicles and heavy equipment are stored. The upstairs serves as a meeting and training area. The Team is moved into the building now and we have already put it to good use for a variety of Team functions and training exercies. The facility also served as a medical base station during the Ouray Ice Festival. Stop by the next time you are in Ouray and check it out.

You too can be a part of the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team barn! To raise funds for the construction of our rescue barn, we embarked on an ambitious commemorative brick program. The response from the local community, and our many supporters around the world was overwhelming, to say the least. These bricks are installed on a special wall outside the facility and serve as true tribute to our many supporters. Although our major construction efforts are behind us, maintaining our facility is big part of our annual budget planning process. Therefore, our Brick Campaign continues, with all proceeds devoted exclusively to the care and maintenance of our facility.
